Box Score 2 INDIANA, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by IUP Sunday by the scores of 10-0 and 14-1 in Indiana.
Clarion was the home teams in both games after the Golden Eagles home field was deemed unplayable Friday and the contest were moved to Indiana Sunday.
Drew Pirritano had three hits on the days, including two in the second game, while
Bill Hasson had a pair of base knocks and an RBI on the afternoon with all of them coming in Game Two.
In the first game, things were tight through two innings with IUP (20-13 overall, 6-6 PSAC West) holding a 1-0 lead through two innings thanks to a run in the top of the first.
But the Crimson Hawks exploded for seven runs in the next three innings to take control of the game. That included a four-run third, a one-run fourth and a two-run fifth. IUP then added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh banging out 14 hits against Clarion pitchers
Brett Whitman and
Sam Skraba.
Whitman started and went 3 1/3 innings allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out one. Skraba relieved in the fourth and went the final 3 2/3 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out two.
Meanwhile, Clarion's offense was limited to two hits, doubles by Pirritano and
Mike Lockhart.
Pirritano's double came in the third inning with two outs and started a two-out rally that saw the Golden Eagles load the bases after a walk to
Brett Sutika and catcher's interference with
Derek Danver at the plate. But
Nick Maskrey popped out to shortstop to end the threat.
Lockhart also doubled with two outs in the second but was stranded on second when
Jordan Mesoraco struck out.
The offense picked things up a bit in Game Two for the Golden Eagles (1-27, 1-15) with Clarion getting eight hits while also scoring in the bottom of the first when Pirritano led off with a single to right center, stole second and scored on a two-out single to left by Hasson. Hasson then went to third on a single to right center by
Ben Thomas before
Josh Ponsoll struck out swinging.
Pirritano's run tied the game at one, but IUP scored the final 13 runs off two Clarion pitchers platting four in the second and three each in the third, fourth and fifth.
Clarion had chances to score throughout the afternoon but couldn't get another run home.
In the second, Maskrey led off with a single and Pirritano moved him to second with a two-out infield single. But
Joey Lopez grounded into a fielder's choice ending the inning.
The third inning saw Hasson with a one-out single and Ponsoll deliver a two-out double to put runners at second and third. But Maskrey flew out to center ending the threat.
In the fifth, Lockhart reached when he was hit by a pitch with one out and went to second on a wild pitch in front of a Hasson walk. But Thomas grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Clarion also had runners on in the sixth and seventh but couldn't score.
Pirritano collected two more hits in the game going 2-for-4, as did Hasson, who was 2-for-3 with the RBI.
Caleb McGary took the loss going three innings and allowing 10 runs, five earned (Clarion committed three errors in the game), on 10 hits and a walk while striking out two.
Cameron Damski finished the final four frames allowing four runs, all earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out one.
The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday when they hope to open their home slate against Point Park, field conditions and weather permitting.
