Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – Two solid pitching performances from Point Park led them to a sweep of the doubleheader over the Golden Eagles Wednesday afternoon at Clarion.
In game one, Point Park led 2-0 until they broke it open by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh, which put the game away to give them the 7-0 victory.
Point Park opened up the game in the first inning on an RBI single with nobody out. There was not much offense after that until the top of the fifth where Point Park picked up another run on an RBI single.
Point Park (31-13) was able to pick up five more in the top half of the sixth to add to their total.
The Golden Eagles were able to get a variety of base runners on throughout the ball game, loading up the bases twice, but were unable to push a run across the plate.
Drew Pirritano led off the first inning with a double, but was unable to come in and score. He also got on base later in the game by the way of a walk.
Bill Hasson picked up one of the other hits for the Golden Eagles, while
Joey Lopez also reached base twice with a walk and a single.
Ryan Voisey started the game on the mound for Clarion. He went 5+ innings while giving up five hits, seven runs, five walks, and he struck out two.
Lopez pitched all seven innings for Point Park. He gave up three hits and walked four batters in the shutout win.
In game two, Point Park got out to a big lead early while scoring eight runs in the first two innings which gave them the 9-1 victory.
Point Park batted around each of the first two innings while picking up nine hits, four walks, and eight runs.
Clarion was able to score its only run of the game in the third inning when
Joey Gierlak led off the inning with a walk, and was able to score after a ball was thrown out of play on a
Josh Ponsoll single.
Ponsoll's single was Clarion's only hit of the ball game.
Derek Danver was able to reach base twice in the game by the way of two hit by pitches. Ponsoll reached base later in the game on an error by Point Park.
Drew Vandermeer started the game for Clarion and picked up the loss.
Alex Borofski came into the game in the second inning to relieve Vandermeer. Borofski pitched 5.2 innings while giving up only one earned run, eight hits, and seven strikeouts.
Cetta picked up the win for Point Park. He surrendered one hit and struck out eight Golden Eagle batters in his seven innings of work.
Clarion (1-29) returns to action Friday afternoon at home where it will face Mercyhurst for a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
