Box Score 2 MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Mansfield Tuesday afternoon including a heart-breaking 7-6 loss in Game Two when Mansfield scored six in the bottom of the seventh to win.
In the first game, the Mountaineers won 6-0.
But it was in Game Two that Clarion had its best chance to pick up its second win of the season.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 6-1 lead thanks to a pair of RBIs each from
Bill Hasson and
Mike Lockhart and three hits from
Jordan Mesoraco and a strong six innings from starting pitcher
Alex Borofski.
But Mansfield took advantage of a key error on Hasson, the first baseman, with one out in the seventh to rally for the win, which they got on a two-run, walk-off home run by Anthony Renz with two outs off reliever
Tyler Delval.
The inning started off innocently enough when Mitchell Isenecker flew out to center off Borofski. But Stanton Tentnowski doubled to right field, and Conor Thompson singled him home making it 6-2. Seth Tressler then doubled to left-center putting runners on second and third with one out.
That was it for Borofski, and Delval came in. But he promptly walked Brandon Miller, and then Dylan Woodworth grounded the ball to Hasson, who misplayed it allowing Thompson and Miller to score with Miller going to third making it 6-4. Joey Andrew then hit a sacrifice fly to center making it 6-5 before Renz's blast won the game.
Clarion had built the 6-1 lead thanks to solo runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth and two in the seventh. Mansfield got its first run in the sixth.
In the first,
Drew Pirritano singled leading off the game and scored on an RBI groundout by Hasson.
Then in the fourth,
Nick Maskrey singled leading off and scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to center by
Josh Ponsoll.
In the fifth, Mesoraco, who was on base in all four plate appearances also drawing a walk, singled with one out and scored on a double to right-center by Hasson. But
Derek Danver was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning trying to score from first on the hit.
The sixth inning saw Lockhart lead off with his first career home run and the second home run of the season for Clarion making it 4-0.
After Mansfield got a run back in the sixth, Clarion added what appeared to be two insurance runs in the seventh when Maskrey hit a sacrifice fly and Lockhart singled.
Borofski pitched well going 6 1/3 innings allowing four runs, just two earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three. Delval took the loss going 1/3 of an inning allowing three runs, none earned, on one hit and a walk.
Hasson, Lockhart and
Joey Lopez all had two hits in the game for Clarion.
In Game One, Mansfield rode a four-run third inning to the 6-0 win.
Clarion had seven hits in the game including two from Maskrey but left seven men on base including three in scoring position.
Ryan Voisey took the loss going 4 2/3 inning allowing four runs on five hits and four walks while two strikeouts.
Ken DiBucci went 1 1/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out two.
Clarion (1-34) returns to action Saturday at Shippensburg.
