Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader vs. California at Washington's CONSOL Energy Park Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles lost Game One 8-0 and Game Two 4-0.
In the first game, Cal (18-7 overall, 5-1 PSAC West) used a pair of three-run innings to break open a 2-0 game. The Vulcans, who scored twice in the first, made it 5-0 with three in the fourth and then finished the scoring with three more in the fifth.
Ryan Voisey took the loss for the Golden Eagles (1-19, 1-9) going 4 1/3 innings and allowing eight runs, all earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out one and also hitting a batter.
Shane Sullivan (2/3 IP, 1 H) and
Kevin Gnacinski (1 IP, 0 H) cleaned things up in relief for Clarion.
Offensively,
Drew Pirritano and
Jordan Mesoraco each had base hits for the Golden Eagles.
In the second game, Cal used a four-run sixth innings to break open a scoreless tie.
Tyler Delval took the loss despite a strong start that saw him allow four runs, three earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out one. Sullivan pitched 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief striking out one.
Clarion had seven hits in the game, all singles, with Pirritano,
Jon Roncolato,
Bill Hasson,
Brett Sutika,
Joey Lopez,
Ben Thomas and
Joey Gierlak all picking up base knocks.
The Golden Eagles had a couple of opportunities to score but weren't able to cash in.
In the first, Clarion had runners on first and second with one out following a walk to Mesoraco and a hit batter in Roncolato. But
Nick Maskrey struck out and
Bill Hasson grounded out ending the threat.
Then in the third Gierlak led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Pirritano. But Mesoraco, trying to bunt, hit into a fielder's choice with Gierlak out at third. Roncolato then flew out and Maskrey fouled out ending the inning.
Clarion also had two on in the sixth and seventh but couldn't score.
In the sixth, Roncolato singled with one out and went to second on a two-out single by Hasson. But
Mike Lockhart flew out ending the threat.
Then in the seventh, Sutika singled leading off and went to second on a pinch-hit base hit by Thomas. But
Justin Smith struck out pinch hitting for Gierlak, and Pirritano grounded into a game-ending double play.
Clarion returns to action Saturday vs. California in Washington.
