BASEBALL SWEEPS LOCK HAVEN TO CLOSE OUT THE SEASON

Derek Danver went 4 for 7 with 2 RBI's and 3 runs scored in the DH.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball team swept a doubleheader vs. Lock Haven to close out the season Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
 
Clarion used a pair of comeback wins to sweep the DH.  Clarion came back to win game one 4-2 and trailed 3-0 in the nightcap before coming back to win 6-3.
 
In game one, Caleb McGary started on the hill for the Golden Eagles.  Lock Haven scored a run in the top half of the first and third innings respectively.  Clarion picked up its first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Bill Hasson drove in Jordan Mesoraco to cut the Lock Haven lead to one.
 
Neither team scored a run in the fourth inning.  In the fifth, Clarion's bats came alive.  Derek Danver drove in Josh Ponsoll to tie the game at two.  Later in the inning, with runners on second and third base, Hasson hit a groundball to shortstop where he threw the ball over the head of the first baseman which allowed Drew Pirritano and Joey Gierlak to score to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead.
 
In the seventh, Lock Haven (16-28) loaded up the bases with two outs before a groundout ended the ball game.
 
McGary went all seven innings and picked up the win for Clarion.  He gave up five hits, two runs, walked four, and struck out two batters.  Cummings picked up the loss for Lock Haven.
 
Clarion finished with ten hits in the game.  Joey Lopez, Pirritano, and Ponsoll all had two hits each while Hasson went 1 for 3 with two RBI's.  Danver, Mesoraco, and Gierlak also added a hit each for the Golden Eagles with Danver adding the other RBI. 
 
In game two, Lock Haven got on the board early with back to back singles in the first.  Lock Haven had a runner on third base with no outs, but he was left stranded after Kevin Gnacinski was able to keep him at third.
 
Lock Haven added a pair of runs in the third inning to add to their lead.  Hamilton singled and Botts was able to score by the way of an error by Lopez.  The other run in the inning came on a balk by Gnacinski with runners at first and third base.
 
But in the bottom half of the third, the Golden Eagles were able to score four runs on five hits in the inning.  Danver singled to right field which drove in Gierlak to make it a 3-1 game.  Later in the inning, Nick Maskrey hit a sacrifice fly to center field which drove in Mesoraco. Clarion then was able to hit back to back RBI singles by Mike Lockhart and Lopez to give the Golden Eagles the lead at 4-3.
 
Clarion was able to add a few insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Hasson drove in Pirritano and then Maskrey hit another sacrifice fly which drove in Danver to give Clarion a 6-3 lead.
 
In the seventh, Lock Haven used a pair of singles which drove Gnacinski out of the ball game.  Sam Skraba came in to close for the Golden Eagles.  He was able to get Botts to strike out looking and then Kyne flew out to left field to end the game.
 
Both teams combined for 23 hits in the ball game.  Clarion came up with 12 of those and was led by Danver who went 3 for 4 with an RBI while scoring two runs.  Hasson added two hits for the Golden Eagles while also picking up an RBI and scoring a run.  Pirritano, Mesoraco, Maskrey, Lockhart, Lopez, Ponsoll, and Gierlak all added a hit each.
 
All nine batters in the Clarion lineup were able to pick up at least one hit in the game.  Gnacinski got the win for Clarion while pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and giving up 11 hits, three runs (two earned), and struck out four batters.  Garrett Shnyder picked up the loss for Lock Haven while Sam Skraba was able to finish off the last two batters of the game, which gave him the save.
 
Clarion finished up its season winning the final two games.  The Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-40 and 4-20 in the PSAC West.
