SOCCER DEFEATS SHIPPENSBURG 1-0

Liz Ventura scored the game winning goal for Clarion early in the second half.

Box Score CLARION, Pa. – Behind a Liz Ventura second half goal, the Clarion University women's soccer team defeated Shippensburg 1-0 Saturday afternoon which tied the best conference start in Golden Eagle history with 11 points (3-1-2). 
 
"That was a nice way to break through," said head coach Rob Eaton.  "Liz has struggled lately but maybe that will be the spark that she needs and it will break the cycle."
 
With the 11 points through the first six games, Clarion (3-1-2, 3-1-2 PSAC) adds its second best overall start in school history.  With the five points after three homes games, the Golden Eagles are off to their best home start ever.
 
In the first half, neither team had much going on offense. Clarion goalkeeper Laura Saussol finished with four saves in the first half to lead the Golden Eagles.
 
Early in the second half, Ventura got things going for Clarion.  After a shot by Alyssa Liebdzinski went wide, Ventura took a pass from Kelly Antonucci which found the back of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
 
Saussol finished with six saves in the game with one huge save coming in the 67th minute to keep the game 1-0.  Shippensburg had a few chances to score late but could not find the back of the net.
 
The Raiders outshot Clarion 14-6 in the match.  Shippensburg (4-2, 3-2 PSAC) goalie Shelbie Rackley finished with two saves.
 
Liebdzinski led the Golden Eagle attack with two shots, while Aubrey Monte, Nikita Bonnell, Mackenzie Stover, and Ventura all added one a piece.
 
The Golden Eagles return to action at 3 p.m. Friday where they will travel to Kutztown.
