DELVAL PITCHES COMPLETE GAME 1-0 LOSS IN GAME ONE

(Erie, Pa.): Clarion sophomore pitcher Tyler Delval (Cokeburg/Bentworth) yielded only 1 run and 5 hits in game one, but the Eagles lost a tough 1-0 decision, and then lost the nightcap 7-0 to close a weekend 4-game PSAC-West series at Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon.

Originally set to be played at Clarion but moved to Mercyhurst because of playing conditions, the Golden Eagles record dropped to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC-West, while the Lakers went to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC-West.

In game one Mercyhurst scored in the top of the first (Clarion the home team) when Cox singled home Seigel who doubled with one out for the game's only run.

Delval pitched a complete game tossing 7 innings, yielding 1 run on only 5 hits, struck out 9 and walked only 1.

The Holmberg brothers accounted for Clarion's three hits – Joe Holmberg (Jr. Wilcox/Johnsonburg) had two and Mitch Holmberg (Fr. Wilcox/Johnsonburg) had one. The best scoring chance came in the fourth when Mitch singled, and with one out Nick Maskrey (Sr. Cranesville/Northwestern) walked, but the Eagles saw Holmberg thrown out trying to steal third and the Eagles were unable to score.

In game two the Lakers scored two in the first, single runs in the second and third and two in the fourth to take control of the game. Eagle pitcher Alex Borofski (So. Canonsburg/Seton LaSalle) took the loss while pitching the first three innings and gave up 4 runs, all earned, on six hits and with 3 walks and 4 k's. Tanner Fitting (FR. Lebanon) pitched one inning and gave up two runs, while Jason Gerland (Fr. West Chester/W.C. East) tossed 3 innings and yielded one run.

Leadoff hitter and center fielder Drew Pirritano (Jr. Scranton/West Scranton) went 3 for 3 in the game to lead the Clarion hitters. Joe Holmberg had the Eagles only other hit.

Clarion is scheduled to play at Pitt-Johnstown all four games this weekend again due to field conditions – with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
