Box Score 2 CLARION BASEBALL RALLIES FOR SPLIT IN SEASON OPENER
(Washington, Pa.): Freshman
Kane McCall (Fr. Rimersburg/Union) pitched 5 scoreless innings, and
Nick Maskrey (Sr. Cranesville)and
Shayne Reimold (So. Greenville/Reynolds) had clutch hits in the top of the ninth in game two rallying the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 win over California and a split in the season opening baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
A non-conference doubleheader held at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa., Clarion lost game one by a 3-0 score and Clarion finished the day with a 1-1 season record. The split for Cal left the Vulcans with a record of 3-4.
Cal led game two 3-0 scoring a run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the third off starter
Tyler Delval (So. Cokeburg), who pitched four innings and gave up three runs on 5 hits with no walks.
Clarion started its comeback in the sixth scoring two runs.
Josh Ponsoll (So. Edinboro/General McLane) and
Drew Pirritano (Jr. Scranton) singled, were sacrificed to second and third, then
Mitch Holmberg hit a sac fly to score Ponsoll and Maskrey singled home Pirritano to cut Cal's lead to 3-2.
In the ninth inning
Mitch Holmberg (Fr. Wilcox/Johnsonburg) led off with a triple, and Maskrey doubled Holmberg home to tie the game with no one out. Maskrey was bunted over to third with one out, and scored on a single from
Shayne Reimold which proved to be the game-winning hit.
Freshman
Kane McCall (Rimersburg/Union), who pitched 5 scoreless innings, put the Vulcans down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first collegiate win. McKall gave up 2 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2 in his first outing.
"What a performance from
Kane McCall and some clutch hitting by the entire team in game two today," said a very pleased seventh year head coach
Mike Brown. "I was proud of the way we played today and especially coming back to win game two. We played strong, fundamental baseball with solid pitching and clutch hitting. For our first time outside I am very pleased."
Drew Pirritano went three for four in the game two , while Maskrey and
Ben Thomas (Jr. Quarryville) had two hits each.
In game one Cal defeated the Eagles 3-0 scoring single runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings.
Drew Pirritano went 2 for 4 with starter
Brett Whitman (Sr. Coudersport) charged with the loss. Whitman pitched three innings and gave up only 1 run on 3 hits.
Sam Skraba tossed 3.2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, with
Alex Borofski (So. Canonsburg) tossing .1 innings, and
Ken DiBucci (Sr. Verona/Riverview) 1 scoreless inning. Pirritano finished the day with a strong 5 for 8 hitting performance for Clarion.
Clarion will travel to Millersville on March 13
th for a doubleheader that will key a 9-game Spring trip that will end in South Carolina against Francis Marion on March 19.
