Box Score 2 GREESNBURG, Pa. – Josh Ponsoll had a four-hit day, but the Clarion University baseball team was swept in a PSAC West doubleheader by Seton Hill Sunday in Greensburg.
Clarion (4-18 overall, 2-12 PSAC West), which was the home team for both games, lost the first contest 6-5 despite Ponsoll going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Then in the second game, the Golden Eagles dropped a 12-1 decision with Ponsoll going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
In Game One, first-place Seton Hill (24-9, 13-1) touched up Clarion starter and loser Kane McCall for four first-inning run, two of which were unearned thanks to a Joey Lopez error.
Clarion cut the lead to 4-2 with two runs in the third on RBI singles by Tyler Falk, who was 2-for-4, and Ponsoll which scored Derek Danver and Mike Lockhart, but Seton Hill answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 6-2 lead.
The Golden Eagles continued to battle picking up an unearned run in the fifth when Lockhart hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Joe Holmberg, who had reach on an error leading off the inning.
Clarion then added two more in the sixth, both unearned, without the benefit of a hit. Two hit batters and a two-base error on a ball hit by Danver got the Golden Eagles to within one.
McCall took the loss going the distance allowing six run, four earned, on eight hits and five walks.
In Game Two, Seton Hill scored twice in the first, once each in the second and third and four times in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before Clarion grabbed a run in the bottom of the fourth when Ponsoll doubled scoring Holmberg. But the Griffins got the run back in the sixth and then scored three in the seventh.
Sean White took the loss going 3 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, all earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out two. Lopez relieved and pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing two hits and a walk and one unearned run while striking out two. Tanner Fitting finished off going one inning allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits and a walk while striking out one.
Clarion had three hits in the game with Holmberg and Danver joining Ponsoll.
The Golden Eagles are slated to return to action at 1 p.m. Tuesday when they host Bloomsburg field conditions allowing.
