Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – Behind a strong pitching performance from
Alex Borofski in game one, the Clarion University baseball team split with Bloomsburg Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field in the first home doubleheader of the season.
Clarion (5-19) won game one 3-2 but dropped the second contest 15-6.
In game one, Borofski got the win as he went the distance for the Golden Eagles giving up eight hits, two runs, and three walks over his seven innings of work.
Bloomsburg (17-13) got things started in the top half of the first when Damin Muth singled in Eric Frain for the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the second, Clarion tied the game at one when
Joe Holmberg singled in
Tyler Falk. The Golden Eagles picked up a pair of runs in the third when
Mike Lockhart and Falk hit back-to-back RBI double's to give Clarion a 3-1 lead.
Bloomsburg added a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.
The score remained the same as the game headed to the top of the seventh. Brady West led the inning off with a single for Bloomsburg. West then stole second base before Borofski walked Aaron Russell. The next batter hit a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. Nick Mazza hit a sharp ball to second and
Derek Danver cut runner down at home to keep the score at 3-2. Joey Casselberry grounded out to third to end the game as Clarion held on for the victory.
Lockhart went 2-for-3 to lead the Golden Eagles offense with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Brian Almand and Muth each went 2-for-3 for Bloomsburg in the loss.
In game two, Bloomsburg scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. In the second, the Huskies forced Clarion starting pitcher
Troy Kumar out of the game as they scored six in the inning to take an 8-0 lead.
Kumar left the game with runners on first and third and nobody out trailing 3-0 as he took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
Clarion picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single from
Josh Ponsoll, scoring
Jordan Mesoraco and Falk, cutting the lead to six.
But in the third, Bloomsburg added to their lead scoring four runs to take a 13-2 lead.
The Golden Eagles added three in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from
Joey Lopez and a two-run double by Holmberg, who was one of four Golden Eagles with two hits in the ball game joining Falk, Mesoraco, and Ponsoll.
Muth went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI's and three runs scored to power the Huskies offense while Eric Frain went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Almand went 3-for-5 as had a pair of RBI's and two runs scroed.
Matt Hurd got the win for Bloomsburg in the night cap as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday when they will travel to play Gannon for a PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
