Baseball Drops Two in Cary, NC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARY, NC. – Playing their first games of the weekend after inclement weather yesterday, the Clarion University baseball team went 0-2 Saturday afternoon in double-header action, dropping the  opening matchup to Frostburg State in extra innings 2-1, and dropping the second game to Goldey-Beacom 7-3. The two losses moves Clarion's overall record to 0-6 on the season.  The Blue and Gold will close out the weekend tomorrow when they take on Tiffin at 10 am at the USA Baseball Complex.

Game 1
Clarion jumped out to an early lead in game one as scoring came at a rarity all game long. The Golden Eagles opened up scoring in the first inning, when Matt Privette was able to score after an error by the Bobcat left fielder. Privette singled to start the game and advanced to second on a wild pitch the very next action.

Frostburg State was quick to answer the call though as a leadoff double in the bottom of the first put the Bobcats in a position to tie the game. After Brett Fogle managed to get to third on a fielder's choice, he scored on the next at bat after a Ryan Roell Sac-Fly tied the game at one all.

From that point on it was a pitcher's duel as both teams would go scoreless into the bottom frame of the eleventh inning. Clarion starter Trevor McGee went eight innings of two hit baseball before being forced from the game. He went on to fan seven Bobcat batters.

On the other side Ben Vok tossed 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out five before his day was done.

Going into the late innings Clarion had multiple opportunities to put their selves in a position to win the game but could manufacture the winning run. Clarion had their best opportunity in the top of the tenth inning when Alex Ficorilli doubled to left field and was able to advance to third after a Thomas Lavin fly out to right.

Nick Fugh continued the inning with a walk putting runners on the corners. Cole Shaffer loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch but Frostburg managed to get out of the inning after Danny Fox flied out to right field.

On the day Clarion racked up eight hits. Privette and Ficorilli each managed multiple hits for the Golden Eagles, while Barth led the Blue and Gold with three hits in five at bats. Ficorilli also led the Golden Eagles with two doubles.

Game 2
Golden Eagles picked up an early lead but fell in the late innings, as Goldey-Beacom took a 7-3 victory over the Blue and Gold.

Clarion picked up two runs in the top of the first inning after Barth and Lavin managed to navigate their ways around the bases to give Clarion they early 2-0 advantage. Goldey-Beacom answered with a run of their own in the bottom frame of the inning after a pair of walks and a single put Goldey-Beacom in scoring position.

Clarion added one more run in the top of the sixth inning when Tim Irons double and advanced to third on a passed ball, Privette singled to bring him home giving Clarion a 3-1 lead.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth it was all Clarion until the Goldey-Beacom bats came alive. The Lightning picked up two runs to even the game at three, courtesy of a hit by pitch a single and a double by the heart of the Goldey-Beacom line-up.
Clarion was unable to answer the horn as the Lightning added four more runs across the next two innings. Justin Hill hit a homerun in the bottom of the seventh that scored two and gave Goldey-Beacom a 5-3 lead and they never looked back from there.

The Lightning plated two more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach and seal the 7-3 victory.

Dereck Pritchard got the nod on the hill for Clarion, tossing six innings allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out two.
