Tennis Edged by Shippensburg, 4-3

CLARION, Pa. – The Golden Eagle tennis match opened up their dual match season on Saturday morning, falling in a tight 4-3 match to Shippensburg at Campbell Courts. Clarion split the singles session with the Raiders but the doubles point proved to be the difference in the loss.

Alexis Strouse, Davan Lion and Josie Beckerleg all picked up wins in singles action, with all three dominating in straight sets victories. Strouse gave up just one game to the Raiders' No. 1 singles player Brighid Cantwell, winning 11 straight to defeat her opponent 6-1, 6-0. Davan Lion was similarly successful in the No. 2 singles match, beating Brooklyn Rupert 6-3, 6-1.

That pairing was also the lone winner in the doubles session. Strouse and Lion beat Cantwell and Corrine Markovich by a 6-4 score in a tightly-contested bout at the top of the lineup.

Also winning on the day was Josie Beckerleg, who took the No. 5 singles match over Jessalyn Morrow. Like Strouse, Beckerleg dropped just one game in two sets for the victory.

Despite the split in singles, the Raiders took the team match by winning the doubles point, as well as the No. 6 singles match. With their wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, it was enough to lock up the victory for Shippensburg.
