ERIE, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle women's soccer team cut the deficit in half late in the first half on Wednesday afternoon, but Clarion was unable to pull even with Gannon in falling by a 3-1 score to the Golden Knights at McConnell Family Stadium.
Â
Evelyn Cook scored her third goal of the year and her first since a two-goal game against IUP on Sept. 6, with her tally coming just 18 seconds after Gannon's Gabby Boden scored to make it 2-0 in the second half. The Golden Eagles took possession on the touch after Boden's goal and methodically moved it up the field, with
Kylee Cross pushing the ball from the center of the field up the left wing to
Emily Mannion. Mannion worked around a defender and fired a shot on net that ricocheted off the hands of goalkeeper Morgan Sinan and landed in front of the net.
Â
Cook worked around the net front defender and tapped the ball with her foot, pushing it toward the left post and just squeaking it past the goal line. That cut Gannon's lead down to 2-1.
Â
That said, the Golden Knights had the better of the offensive opportunities for most of the game, in particular in the second half. Gannon led by a score of 1-0 after 45 minutes of action, with Grace Emanuel scoring the first of her two goals of the game in the 26
th minute. Gannon outshot Clarion 20-4 in the second half, with 10 of those shots coming on net and goalkeeper
Alex Velez. Velez finished the game with 11 total saves on the day.
Â
Boden put Gannon ahead 2-0 in the 56
th minute, taking a feed from Emanuel and beating Velez to the far post to give her team the advantage. Cook's tally cut the lead in half but the Golden Eagles were unable to find the equalizer. One of the best opportunities came in the 63
rd minute when Mannion stepped into a clear shot on net and pushed it just high, clipping the football cross bar with a hard shot. Emanuel scored again in the 80
th minute to give Gannon a 3-1 lead.
