CLARION, Pa. --- Three-quarters of a game's worth of even play gave way to three quick goals in the waning minutes, as Mercyhurst defeated the Golden Eagle soccer team 4-0 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.
Â
The Lakers and Golden Eagles played a tight game for the entirety of the first half and most of the second, as Clarion (for the most part) withstood the possession and shot advantage that the Lakers were compiling. The lone goal of the first half came in the 33
rd minute, after a foul by
Reese Aquilio gave the Lakers a goal kick 60 feet out from the goal. Anamari Bosnjak took the attempt and beat goalkeeper
Alex Velez in the upper righthand corner to give Mercyhurst a lead.
Â
That was also the Lakers could settle for in the first half, though, as Velez routinely turned them away from the net. Conversely, the Mercyhurst defense limited Clarion to just one shot on net in the first half, a routine save by Maddie Elbro on
Marisa Colondrillo.
Â
Ciara DiMauro had an opportunity to tie it up early in the second half when she collected a lead pass and beat a defender to the goal line. She worked it toward the front of the net but could not manage a shot on Elbro, and the opportunity passed. By the 78
th minute the Lakers broke through for their second goal of the game, with Anna Clark bending in a corner kick with her left foot just inside the far post.
Â
That opened the floodgates for the Lakers, who scored twice more in the next eight minutes to create a 4-0 lead.
