CARY, N.C. --- The Golden Eagle baseball team picked up its first win of the season in come-from-behind fashion on Saturday, scoring seven unanswered runs in an 8-4 victory over Kutztown.
Â
A week before the Golden Bears got the better of the Golden Eagles in both ends of a doubleheader, but this week Clarion turned the tables, coming back from a late deficit to post a fairly comfortable win over their opponents from the eastern part of the state.
Scott McManamon finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, bringing in the lion's share of the runs in the victory.
Â
Kutztown built a quick 4-1 lead in the game, with the only blemish on their ledger a sacrifice fly by McManamon that plated
Tyler Meachum in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Bears broke through in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Clarion responded in the fifth frame, with
Emerson Abromavage kicking things off with an RBI triple that plated
Lenny Piccini.
Brett Pitzer scored him with a sac fly and McManamon did the rest, pushing a double to left field that brought home
Tyler Meachum and
Nate Petke to make it a 5-3 Clarion lead.
Â
The Golden Eagles tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, starting with
Nate Petke's RBI fielder's choice to score Byers from third.
Tyler Meachum scored Lenny Picccini on an infield single to make it 7-4, and
Caden Contant hit an RBI single to plate Petke in the sixth to make it 8-4.
Â
Sam Rice kept up the momentum with three shutout innings of action, and
Riley Palmer tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the win for the Golden Eagles. Starter
Michael Proios got the win with five innings of action, giving up four runs.
Â
Contant went 3-for-5 at the dish with one RBI, while McManamon finished the day with three RBIs. Meachum went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
