WILSON, N.C. --- The Golden Eagle baseball team concluded their weekend in Wilson with a pair of road wins, defeating Chestnut Hill by an 8-3 score and then turning around to beat Alderson Broaddus by a 15-3 score.
Game 1: Clarion 8, Chestnut Hill 3Â
Recap: The Golden Eagles and Chestnut Hill traded runs in the first inning, with the Griffins striking first on a two-run home run by right fielder Ahmaad Goldson. Those would be the only earned runs allowed by starter Reilly Shafer the rest of the way, though, as the starter pitched a gem of a game the rest of the way. He allowed an unearned run in the third inning but was otherwise untouchable, throwing 8.0 innings and allowing just five hits while striking out seven. Most notably, Shafer was part of a Golden Eagle pitching effort that allowed no bases on balls and hit no batters.Â
Mason Kepler and Brett Pitzer recorded RBI singles in the first and third innings, respectively, to pull the Golden Eagles within 3-2, but the offense really got going in the sixth. Sam Economy led off the sixth inning by being hit by a pitch, and he advanced to third on Pitzer's single through the right side of the infield. Tyler Meachum put down a perfect bunt in the next plate appearance, scoring Economy from third and reaching first himself to tie the game. Â
A pair of productive outs closed out the inning, with Kasey Shughart's fielder's choice to second base scoring Pitzer and Caden Contant's groundout to third bringing Meachum home. That made it 5-3, and the Golden Eagles tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Contant drew a bases-loaded walk to score Meachum, and Kepler brought home a pair with a double to deep right field to make it 8-3. Griffin Snyder came in and worked a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth inning, closing out the win for Clarion.Â
Four Golden Eagles finished with two hits on the day, with Kepler driving in three runs in the process. Clarion stole seven bags in the game, with Economy and McManamon each stealing two bases. Â
Game 2: Clarion 15, Alderson Broaddus 6Â
Recap: The result of Saturday's second game was never really in doubt as the Golden Eagles took an early lead and simply continued to build upon it, at one point scoring 12 unanswered runs over the course of five innings. Clarion was deadly efficient in the win, recording 16 hits and taking advantage of three errors in the victory.Â
The first major blow came in the third inning, when Clarion took the lead. Kasey Shughart scored Connor Booth on an infield single bunt, and Caden Contant brought Shughart and Nate Petke across with a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead after the top of the inning. The Battlers scored a pair in the home half of the inning to draw closer but they would not threaten the Golden Eagles in earnest for the rest of the game. Â
The big Clarion innings came in the sixth and seventh, when the Golden Eagles tallied 11 of their 15 runs to solidify their lead. Leading 4-2 heading into the frame and with the bases loaded, Contant stroked a three-run double to right field to bring three of his teammates across home plate, making it a 7-2 lead. Brycen Dinkfelt added another run for good measure, scoring on a wild pitch to make it an 8-2 Clarion lead. The Golden Eagles exploded for a seven-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning, a rally that included four runs scoring without a necessary swing of the bat. Petke did rip a single down the right field line for an RBI and the duo of Sam Economy and Emerson Abromavage added RBI singles, making it 15-2.Â
The game remained in hand from there, as Clarion finished off a 15-6 decision. Abromavage went 4-of-5 with three runs scored, an RBI and a steal, while Petke wrapped things up with a 3-for-3 performance that included three runs scored and two runs batted in. Pitcher Michael Proios got the start, throwing six innings of two-run ball and striking out seven.
