Baseball Splits on the Road with Frostburg State

HANOVER, Md. --- The Golden Eagle baseball team earned a split on the road on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 9-1 decision to Frostburg State before returning the favor against the Bobcats with a 7-4 victory. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a nine-inning game.

Game 1: Frostburg State 9, Clarion 1

Recap: The opening game of the twinbill remained firmly in the hands of the Bobcats, as Frostburg State effectively kept Clarion off the scoreboard for most of the early portion of the game. That said, the Golden Eagles struck first, after Sam Economy opened the third inning with a single and stole second base with two outs. Caden Contant kept the inning alive with a walk and the pair both swiped bags to put runners in scoring position, and Economy took advantage of a wild pitch to give Clarion a 1-0 lead.

Golden Eagle starting pitcher Reilly Shafer avoided trouble for most of the game, but he eventually gave up three runs in the bottom of the third inning – including an RBI double to Trevor Jones – that put the Bobcats ahead 3-1. Jones added an RBI single in the fifth inning to extend the lead, and Christian Shertzer drove home a pair of runs with a two-run single in the fifth inning, making it 8-1. Mikey Guy added a solo home run in the sixth for additional insurance.

Clarion was held to just three hits in the opening game of the doubleheader, with Scott McManamon, Kasey Shughart and Economy adding hits. Mason Kepler and Contant drew two walks apiece.

Game 2: Clarion 7, Frostburg State 4

Recap: Shughart got things going for the Golden Eagles to start the second game of the twinbill, leading off the game with a walk before stealing second. His attempt to steal third yielded even more dividends, as the throw to nab him sailed into the outfield and allowed him to score.

Frostburg State scored the next two runs, but catcher Cy Probst's RBI single turned out to be a rally killer as he was thrown out at second, keeping it a 2-1 game. That allowed Shughart to add the equalizer in the fifth inning, as the junior outfield scored Alfredo Hurtado on an RBI single to right field. Tyler Meachum eventually game around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Hurtado scored Daren Byers in the top of the sixth inning, going the opposite way to make it 4-2, but the Bobcats evened things up 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning. McManamon broke that deadlock in the top of the ninth inning, blasting his third home run of the season to score Contant and give Clarion a 6-4 advantage. Emerson Abromavage tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to right field, and Joe Rossi worked a scoreless ninth for the save.

Sam Rice was effective in the start, allowing just three runs in six innings to earn a no decision. Snyder two innings of relief, allowing just one run and picking up the win. Shughart went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
