Close Matches Abound, but Tennis Falls to Brevard

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. ---The Golden Eagle tennis team closed out their week in South Carolina on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a 5-2 score to Brevard in Hilton Head.

The match was highlighted by a number of close matches, with two singles matches requiring third set tiebreakers to decide the action, as well as a late tiebreaker in the No. 1 doubles match. In the latter, the duo of Davan Lion and Alexis Strouse gave Allie Kogoy and Hannah Hersh a battle, with the two teams needing a tiebreaker set to find a winner. The Tornadoes got the better of that exchange, winning the set 7-3 to finish off an 8-7 win.

The Golden Eagles did break through with a pair of wins in the singles session. Strouse won a tight battle with Kogoy in the No. 2 singles spot, splitting the first two sets with her opponent by 6-3 scores. The Clarion senior came through in the third set tiebreaker, winning by a 10-6 score to earn the team point. Charlie Allison posted the other Clarion win, beating Savannah Anderson in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-3 score.

Lion nearly pulled out a tight decision as well, splitting the first two sets of the No. 1 singles match with Hannah Hersh. Lion won the first set 6-2 but Hersh won the second by a 6-3 score, and then won the third by a 10-6 mark to close out the win. Brevard won the remaining three matches on the court to close out the 5-2 win.
