Baseball Sees Streak Snapped at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle baseball team saw their six-game win streak snapped on Friday afternoon as they dropped a pair of games to Seton Hill in a road doubleheader. The Griffins won the first game by a 7-1 score and went on to a 3-2 win in the second game.

Game 1: Seton Hill 7, Clarion 1

RECAP: There was not much run manufacturing in the first game of the day, as six of Seton Hill's nine hits went for extra bases. That included a pair of home runs for Jack Oberdorf, who hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to open the scoring and capped his first outing with a solo shot down the left field line in the sixth inning.

Neither side scored until that Oberdorf home run in the third inning, but the Golden Eagles cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. Griffin Snyder worked a six-pitch walk with two outs in the inning, Ethan Giangiulio made pitcher Brandon Bergert pay for the free pass, lining a 1-2 pitch into left field for an RBI double.

The Griffins made up for that run allowed in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Matt Frazetta and Braden Durham hit back-to-back two-out doubles to score and make it 3-1. Owen Mandler followed with an RBI double of his own in the fifth inning, and Seton Hill brought home three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including an RBI triple by Owen Henne and Oberdorf's second home run of the day.

Clarion got some offense going in the top of the seventh inning, starting with a two-out single by Mason Kepler and followed by a full-count six-pitch walk to Will Martinez. Scotty McManamon pulled a single through the left side of the infield to load the bases, but Bergert struck out Daren Byers to end the threat.

Game 2: Seton Hill 3, Clarion 2

RECAP: Starting pitchers Isaac Schleich and Jon McCullough were settled in well for most of the second game as the teams combined for just three runs in the first four innings of play. The Griffins scored their first of the game when Jack Whalen took advantage of some miscues by the Golden Eagles, hitting a leadoff single and eventually advancing to third on a stolen base and a throwing error by Connor Booth. He came around to score on a wild pitch, giving his team a 1-0 lead before the second at-bat of the game was completed.

The Golden Eagles made amends in the top of the second inning, tying the game with some heads-up baserunning of their own. Kasey Shughart drew a four-pitch walk with one out, and advanced to second on a productive groundout by Giangiulio. Lenny Piccini moved him to third with a single through the left side and Shughart then took advantage of a McCullough wild pitch, scoring to even things up at 1-1.

Shughart factored into the Golden Eagles' next run as well, driving it in to put his team in the lead. Byers reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning and Caden Contant followed with a single, and both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Shughart hit an infield single to shortstop, beating out a throw and allowing Byers to score to make it 2-1. Another wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs, but McCullough escaped the jam with three straight outs to end the inning.

The difference maker came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Henne hit a one-out single and Whalen followed with a home run, hitting a ball to deep left-center to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead. McCullough continued the momentum he built in the fourth inning, ultimately retiring the final 12 Golden Eagle batters of the game in succession.
