California, Pa. --- After a lightning delay forced a late start, the Golden Eagles soccer team fell to California (PA) by a score of 3-0 in a PSAC West conference matchup. The Vulcans scored early in both halves, setting the tone for the game.
The scoring opened just 8 minutes and 49 seconds into the match, when Veronica Warunek nailed a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal past Clarion goalkeeper
Sage Sherk. The game then became a defensive stalemate for most of the first half, with neither team's offense finding much rhythm. The Golden Eagles' offense started to show some life late in the first half, registering a pair of shots on goal.
Nicole Brown took the first Clarion shot with 11 minutes left in the half, moments after
Marisa Colondrillo followed with another attempt.
California opened the second half with an early score, just as they did in the first half, netting a tally only 2 minutes and 47 seconds into the half when Izabella DeGlopper scored her first goal of the season in the bottom left of the net.
The Golden Eagles tried to respond with a goal of their own when
Leah Deal hit the right post off a nice cross-field pass, 8:32 minutes into the second half. The Vulcans extended their lead to 3-0 when Kaylee Elwood launched a shot from just outside the box, passing a leaping Sherk into the top right of the net.
The rest of the game featured many physical plays, with seven fouls being called in the final 24 minutes, including one incident that resulted in a yellow card for California's Elwood.
Clarion is back in action Wednesday night when they travel to Gannon for a PSAC West matchup.
