MORGANTOWN, W.Va. --- The Golden Eagles baseball team avenged a loss from a week ago with a resounding win on Wednesday afternoon, beating Fairmont State 11-4 at Dale Miller Field. Clarion out-hit the Falcons 17-5 while getting a strong effort from the bullpen, allowing just two runs over the final seven innings.
Â
The final score of the previous game between the Golden Eagles and the Falcons was more reminiscent of a football game, with both teams cracking double-digits in runs in a 15-13 loss for Clarion. The rematch saw the Golden Eagles once again score more than 10 runs – the third time they've done so in the first 13 games – but this time Clarion's pitchers limited Fairmont State to five total hits, with just three coming after the first two innings.
Carter Barrett got the win with three innings of shutout relief, striking out two and walking one.
Reilly Shafer followed with his own three innings of shutout relief.
Â
Offensively,
Ethan Giangiulio and
Tyson Gill both finished with three hits, with the former driving in two runs and the latter scoring a pair of runs as well as stealing two bases. Clarion nickel and dimed the Falcons for their 11 runs with just one extra base hit, coming on
Caden Contant's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Â
The Golden Eagles broke through in the top of the second inning, starting with a successful sacrifice bunt from
Tyler Boraski to advance
Jack Hurda and
Cole Yeager into scoring position.
Griffin Snyder, Gill and
Randy Carlo strung together three consecutive RBI singles, and Giangiulio lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Â
The lead was 4-2 until the top of the sixth inning, when the Golden Eagles took advantage of free passes and miscues to tack on three more runs. Giangiulio hit an RBI single to score Gill after the latter went from first to third on a passed ball and wild pitch respectively, and Snyder came across on a wild pitch.
Cole Yeager drove him in with an infield single, making the score 7-2. Gill hit a sac fly of his own in the seventh inning, and Boraski drilled a two-run single in the eighth inning to bump the lead to 8-2.
