DUBOIS, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles baseball team hosted a home doubleheader against West Liberty on Sunday, with Clarion dropping a pair of games to the Hilltoppers at Stern Family Field in DuBois. Clarion lost the first game by a 10-3 score, and the second by a 16-2 score.Â
Â
Game 1: West Liberty 10, Clarion 3Â
Â
RECAP: The Hilltoppers jumped on the Golden Eagles with nine combined runs in the first four innings, taking a 6-0 lead after the top of the third inning after a solo home run by Will Glick and a pair of unearned runs after an error at shortstop by
Tyson Gill. Â
Â
Clarion cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning, and it looked like things were starting to turn their way. The Golden Eagles strung together three straight singles to lead off the inning, with
Cole Yeager, Gill and
Tyler Boraski loading the bases with no outs.
Griffin Snyder lifted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly that scored Yeager, and an errant throw by Kobe Hill to third base allowed Gill to score as well.
Ethan Giangiulio lined a single through the middle of the infield to score Boraski, making the score 6-3.Â
Â
Just when it seemed the tide had turned in favor of the Golden Eagles, West Liberty seized the momentum right back. A failed pickoff attempt allowed Noah Mildren to advance to third base and he later scored on an RBI single. In the next at-bat, Glick hit his second home run of the game, upping the Hilltoppers' lead to 9-3. They added one more run in the top of the seventh inning.Â
Â
Game 2: West Liberty 16, Clarion 2Â
Â
RECAP: The Hilltoppers exploded for a dozen runs in the top of the second inning, lashing nine hits including a two-run home run by Luke Marsh to cap the rally. Clarion pushed back in the bottom of the second inning, starting with a leadoff single by
Brody Hinkle.
Jaxson Wood roped a double down the right field line to push Hinkle to third base, and then Snyder lifted a double to deep left field to clear the bases and bring them home. Giangiulio beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners, but
Randy Carlo ended the inning with a grounder to shortstop.Â
Â
Clarion tried to tack on more runs in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a single from Yeager and a walk from Caden Contant. Hinkle hit a hard liner to center field but Yeager was thrown out at home on an outstanding throw from center fielder Kobe Hill. Gill and Wood both flew out to end the inning.Â
Â
The final best shot to score came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Carlo led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then a mishandled throw at first base with two outs allowed him to advance to third. Jacob Watson struck out Gill to end the threat and the inning.Â
