Baseball Hits Best Wins Total Since '05, Sweeps Central Penn

CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles baseball team reached their highest wins total in 20 years with a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday, with Clarion taking a pair of games from Central Penn at Memorial Stadium. Clarion won the first game 2-1 and the second game 6-1 to improve to 20-20 on the year, marking just the second time in school history the Golden Eagles have won 20 games and the first time since 2005.

Game 1: Clarion 2, Central Penn 1
RECAP: The first game of the day was a breezy low-scoring affair as the pitchers for the Knights and Golden Eagles worked their way through their opposing lineups. After each team scored one run apiece in their halves of the second inning, it was mostly zeroes the rest of the way, save for the game-winning run by Clarion in the fifth inning.

Carter Barrett threw two scoreless innings to earn the win, escaping a modest jam in the top of the fifth. The Knights put runners on first and second with one out, with Terrell Smith advancing to third on a grounder and David Thomas stealing second to put two runners in scoring position. Barrett induced a groundout from Tanner McCoy to end the threat.

Clarion responded with a run in the home half of the inning, starting with Tyson Gill's leadoff triple to the gap in left center field. Randy Carlo lifted a ball to shallow right field and Gill tagged up, beating the throw to the plate to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Barrett followed up with a scoreless sixth inning, allowing a one-out single to Kyle Brent but following up with two quick outs, and Aiden Hartle earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 seventh.

Gill went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, while Brody Hinkle went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hinkle led off the second inning with a single and eventually scored from second base when the center fielder misplayed the ball on Doran Mast's single to center field.

Game 2: Clarion 6, Central Penn 1
RECAP: While the first game was a bullpen outing for the Golden Eagles, the second was dominated mostly by one pitcher, with Jack Edner working his way through the Knights' lineup. After giving up a run in the top of the first inning when Owen Zell scored on a wild pitch, Edner shut the Knights down, sprinkling four hits through five more innings and striking out seven batters.

Clarion got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the second inning, taking the lead by going to work with two outs. Caden Contant drew a two-out walk and scored on Doran Mast's double to deep left center, and the latter crossed the plate on an RBI single up the middle from Cole Yeager.

Hinkle knocked in a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, drilling a ball up the middle of the infield with two outs to bring Ethan Giangiulio and Randy Carlo home. That upped the Clarion lead to 4-1, and Edner made it stand up. The Knights threatened in the top of the fifth inning after Smith reached on a throwing error by Contant, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Zell hit a fly to center field to end the threat.

Sam Felner led off the bottom of the sixth with a hit and scored on a throwing error by the catcher when the latter attempted to back pick Contant at first base, making it 5-1. Mast added another run-scoring single to make it 6-1, and Ryan Hons authored a 1-2-3 seventh inning in relief.
