LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles tennis team forced three tiebreakers and went toe to toe with Lock Haven on Friday, but the Bald Eagles held on for a 5-2 win over Clarion in Lock Haven.
Â
The singles session was hotly contested, with tight scores and tiebreakers abounding over the course of six matches. Three of the six matches went to third sets, with one of those also featuring a tiebreaker to decide the first set. That match resulted in a win for the Golden Eagles, as
Alana Jackson earned her first career collegiate victory over the Bald Eagles' Hope Lapinski. In the No. 5 singles match, Jackson and Lapinski were tied at six games apiece in the first set, but Jackson overcame Lapinski 7-4 in the tiebreaker to take the lead.
Â
In the second set, Lapinski countered with a 6-2 win, setting up a decisive third set to determine the winner. The tiebreaker went long but Jackson was ultimately the victor, winning by a 12-10 score.
Â
Also winning a tiebreaking third set was
Emily McMahan, who traded 6-4 sets with Maci Rohrbach to start the No. 2 singles match. McMahan dominated the third set breaker, winning by a 10-2 score to add to the Golden Eagles' points total.
Â
Just barely missing out on a win in a similar scenario was
Abby Rodgers, who dropped a tight third set tiebreaker to Breanna Chicas at No. 4 singles. Rodgers fell by a 6-0 score in the first set but rebounded for a 6-3 win in the second, setting up a third set. Chicas held on for a 10-8 win in that final frame, clinching the point for the Bald Eagles.
Â
Lock Haven won the remaining three matches on the courts in straight sets, clinching the team win after the team won the doubles point. The Bald Eagles won all three doubles matches by 6-4 scores.
