SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --- The Clarion baseball team faced Slippery Rock in a doubleheader at Critchfield Park on Saturday, coming away with two losses: 5–2 in the first game and 7–3 in the second.
Game 1: Slippery Rock 5, Clarion 2
Clarion managed four hits and two runs, but a sixth-inning rally by The Rock sealed the game. Slippery Rock's decisive rally shifted the momentum with a three-run homer by a pinch hitter, followed by an RBI single that extended its lead. This four-run burst capitalized on free passes, as two walks set the stage for the home run that put The Rock ahead for good.
Earlier, Clarion had taken the lead in the fifth inning with a timely RBI single by
Tyson Gill, driving in
Jacob Patterson after Patterson's leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt by
Ethan McNally. The Golden Eagles had several opportunities to regain control, notably when
Ethan Giangiulio reached on an error to start the sixth, but the ensuing double play halted potential momentum. Clarion's last significant chance came in the seventh, as Patterson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning but was left stranded at second, closing the door on a comeback. The combination of missed opportunities and defensive plays ultimately defined the contest.
Gallagher started the game for the Golden Eagles, pitching 5.0 innings with four hits, one earned run, and five strikeouts. He threw 79 pitches, 53 of which were strikes. Gill contributed with a hit and an RBI, providing an offensive spark. Patterson added a hit, scored a run, and was hit by a pitch. Giangiulio tallied one hit and scored a run.
Game 2: Slippery Rock 7, Clarion 3
Clarion's comeback hopes were stifled in the sixth inning when a throwing error by the center fielder allowed Zach Colangelo to drive in two runs. This error cut the deficit, bringing home
Tyson Gill and
Jon Fijalkowski, but it wasn't enough to overcome The Rock's early advantage. Slippery Rock had capitalized earlier with a two-run sacrifice bunt error in the fourth, which bolstered its lead significantly.
Clarion's offense showed flashes of potential, particularly in the fourth inning when
Wyatt Fether's RBI single brought
Jacob Patterson home. However, the team struggled to convert opportunities, stranding 11 total runners. In the seventh,
Derek Smail provided a late spark with a single, but the lineup was unable to build on it, leaving a runner stranded and failing to close the gap further.
Tyson Gill recorded one hit and scored one run in his appearance. Zach Colangelo contributed with one hit and added an RBI while drawing a walk.
Jacob Patterson scored a run and collected a hit while also earning a walk.
