AKRON, Ohio - Connor Cary broke his second school record in as many days, this time, breaking a record that he set just one season ago. After the second day of competition at the Zippy Invitational, the Golden Eagles men swimming and diving team sit in fifth place after compiling 496 total team points.Â
Clarion will look to return to the pool and finish strong on the last day of events on Sunday.Â
"Our boys continue to claw and fight to get into finals each session," said head coach Bree Kelley. "Then we go even faster at night, it's so fun to be apart of!"
The 200 Free Relay of Nick Soares, Paul Flowers, Connor Cary and Jacob Yant got the day started, grabbing an 11th place finish with a final time of 1:31.86 good enough for 34 team points.
Freshman Mason Irwin had an impressive race in the 400 IM, touching the wall with a final time of 4:01.63, good enough for nine team points.
Cary had his best finish of the night in the 100 Fly, touching the wall with a final time of 48.45, good enough for fourth place, 26 team points, the best finish of the night for the men and another school record for the junior swimmer.Â
Soares picked up his best finish of the night in the 100 Back, notching a 12th palace finish touching the wall with a final time of 50.09 and 15 team points for the blue and gold swimmers.Â
Taking a break from the action in one end of the pool, the action flipped to the diving portion where Zachary Schering took home a top 10 finish in the 1M dive. Schering grabbed seventh place with a final score of 264.50, scoring the Golden Eagles 23 team points as they headed into the last few events of the evening.Â
Rounding out the day was the 800 Free Relay, with David Bocci, Irwin, Austin Prokopec and Cary placing eighth. The quartet finished with a final mark of 6:47.10 ending the night for Clarion with 44 team points.
"Our team is sending a message, making a statement and they are getting it done," said Kelley. "We are keeping pace with these great Division I programs and it is so enjoyable to watch this level of swimming. Bring on day three!"
