Baseball Wins Tight Game at PSU DuBois

DUBOIS, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle baseball team ran their win streak up to six games with a low-scoring road victory on Tuesday night, beating Penn State – DuBois 3-1 at Showers Field.

It was a low scoring affair under the lights on Tuesday, as starters Reilly Shafer and Taylor Boland both put up impressive statistical lines. Shafer threw four innings and allowed just a single hit in that span, a two-out single to Grant Lillard in the bottom of the second inning. He struck out four Nittany Lions and walked only one. Boland, meanwhile, threw five innings and struck out five Golden Eagles, but Clarion victimized him for a pair of runs thanks in part to a couple of walks.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles broke through against Boland. Ethan Giangiulio hit a one-out single to right-center field and Alfredo Hurtado – the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week – moved him over to second with a grounder to the right side of the infield. Connor Booth brought him all the way home with two outs, drilling a single that brought Giangiulio around from second to make it 1-0.

The plate discipline of the Golden Eagles enabled them to tack on another run in the top of the fifth. Scotty McManamon drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base, and Caden Contant worked for a base on balls with two outs to keep the inning alive. Snyder made the Nittany Lions pay with an RBI double, plating McManamon to extend the lead to 2-0.

Clarion strung together a trio of hits in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Maclain Welshans for an insurance tally, with Giangiulio hitting an RBI single to left-center field to bring home Kasey Shughart. The Nittany Lions finally got on the board in the eighth inning when Brett Beith hit a fielder's choice off Bobby Curry, scoring an inherited runner to cut it to 3-1.

Curry came back out for the bottom of the ninth inning and worked himself out of a jame, striking out Jorge Rodriguez and Jake Sikora to pick up the save.

Four Golden Eagles recorded two hits against the Nittany Lions, with Shughart going 2-for-4 with a run score in the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Snyder, Giangiulio and Tyson Gill all added two hits, while McManamon drew two walks.
