Gary McCauley showed that a tight end could block like a tackle, yet catch a pass and run with the football like a wideout. A four-year career starter from 1978 to 1981, he set career records at Clarion for receptions (135) and receiving yards (1,736) and notched the single season reception record with 55 in 1980. He clutched 19 passes for 315 yards and three td’s as a freshman in 1978, helping the Golden Eagles to the PSAC-West crown and a second place finish, and in 1979 caught 18 passes for 305 yards and one td (team was 9-1). In 1980 he grabbed 55 passes for 624 yards and six td’s, and the squad won the PSAC and PSAC-West titles with a 9-2 overall record. In 1981 he caught 43 passes for 492 yards and four td’s. Gary earned first team PSAC-West and  first team District 8 selections in 1980 and 1981, first team Kodak and second team NAIA All-American in 1980, and first team Kodak, AP and NAIA All-American in 1981. He signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Spring of 1981 and remained in camp most of the pre-season before being released.

A native of Pittsburgh and North Allegheny High product, Gary graduated from Clarion in 1982 with a degree in business management. Currently employed by Schreyer Associated, Denver, Colorado, Gary and wife Kristi have a son T.J., and a daughter Stephanie.
