James E. "Pint" Barton was an outstanding baseball player for the Golden Eagles from 1984-87 under head coach Barry McCauliff. A four year starting center fielder, he was a strong defensive presence and was 10 for 10 in stolen bases helping the 1984 team win the PSAC Western Division and place second at the PSAC Championships. As a sophomore in 1985 he hit .363 (33 for 91) with seven doubles, four triples, and one home run, while driving in 16 runs and swiping seven of eight stolen bases. Barton was a PSAC West first team selection and Clarion finished second in the PSAC West. In 1986 he batted .333 (40 for 120), had five doubles, five triples, two home runs and nine runs batted in with 16 of 17 stolen base attempts. In 1987 he was named the PSAC West "Player of the Year"  while setting the Clarion single season hitting record, batting .452 (33 of 73) with five doubles, five triples, three home runs and 20 runs batted in with 10 stolen bases. Also named an NCAA Division II All-American and All-Region selection in 1987, he set the school record for career stolen bases (43), attempts (46) and triples (15). His single season records of slugging percentage (.781 - 1987), stolen bases (16 - 1986), triples (5) still stand today. Pint also played basketball in the 1987 and 88 seasons and score 260 points with 49 assists, 38 steals and 51 rebounds. A 1983 graduate of Aliquippa High, James and wife Maureen reside in Bethel Park. Sons include Jance, James II and Kyle.
